TENANT SOLUTIONS

If you live in an apartment or rental home, there are steps you can take to save on your energy bill. And if eligible, you can work with your landlord to make more substantial energy efficiency improvements to your living space.

Reduce your energy bills

There are many no-cost ways to reduce your energy bill. Some of the most effective tips include:

  • In winter, make sure your storm windows are completely closed and the window locked.  That prevents drafts.

  • Unplug appliances when not in use, and turn off computers and other electronics.

  • If you are eligible, make sure you’ve signed up for HEAP.  Not only do you get a credit on your utility bill, the utility rates you are charged are reduced. Visit your County’s page to find your local HEAP contact.

Here are low-cost ways to save energy:

  • Switch to LED light bulbs.

  • Use a ‘Smart Power Strip’ to reduce energy use when electronics are not being used.

  • Ask your landlord about installing a setback thermostat that reduces the heat when no one is at home.

If you have National Grid as your energy supplier, visit their Marketplace. You’ll find discounted supplies there.  NYSEG customers can explore their Smart Solutions site.

Sign up for community solar

Solar energy is the most abundant, affordable energy source you can find. You don’t need to own your home to benefit from affordable solar energy.  By signing up for a community solar subscription, you will see a reduction on the electricity portion of your bill. Learn more about community solar.

Take advantage of NYSERDA’s EmPower+ program

For real utility savings, you’ll want to work with your landlord to increase the insulation in your home.  You can help your landlord qualify for grants and low-cost financing if you are eligible for the EmPower+ program. Getting your landlord involved is key to unlocking program benefits — let us know if we can help answer any of their questions.

  • You’re eligible if you meet the income guidelines for HEAP, SNAP or public assistance (earn less than 60% of state median income).

  • In addition to insulation and air sealing, you may qualify to have an old, inefficient refrigerator replaced.

If you’re eligible, proceed with these next steps:

  • Let your landlord know that EmPower+ services are available at no cost to them. No lien is placed on the home. For more information, direct them to our Landlord Solutions page.  The Energy Advisor for your county can answer all of their questions.

  • As the eligible tenant, you are the person that applies for the EmPower+ program. We can assist you with the application. Visit our Resources by County page to connect with the Energy Advisor for your county.
