ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy efficiency can save households significant amounts of money, yet many never realize where the opportunities for such savings exist. Insulation, air sealing (reducing air leaks often around joists), and even LED light bulbs can help create a more comfortable and efficient home. Energy efficiency is the first step toward overall energy savings, even before improvements to heating systems.

Complete an energy assessment

A professional energy assessment is a great tool for identifying areas of improvement in your home. NYSERDA’s Energy Assessments help diagnose your home or place of work’s greatest inefficiencies. They help you make a plan and often find financial assistance for future larger projects.

Other low to no-cost solutions

There are also many low and no-cost smaller measures you can take on your home right now. These include such things as:

  • Making sure storm windows are down and windows locked; the lock creates an air seal.

  • Remove window air conditioners in winter

  • Reduce hot water use – wash clothes in cold water, address water leaks, set hot water temperature at 120 degrees,

  • Use appliances when full – dishwasher, washing machine.

  • Keep the freezer filled!  Even freezing used plastic bottles can help keep everything working more efficiently.

  • Check to see that registers aren’t blocked by furniture or other items
