How solar energy works
Solar energy is a powerful source of energy that can be used to electrify your home or place of work. Solar energy is produced when the sun shines onto a solar panel which is then absorbed by the photovoltaic (PV) cells in the panel. Watch how solar energy works.
Solar power offers many benefits, including:
Saving money through reduced electricity bills
Accessing federal, State, and local tax credits for eligible solar projects
Creating stability during periods of electric rate changes
Contributing to a cleaner and healthier community by reducing your carbon footprint
Solar options
Currently, there are two ways you can harness the power of the sun, by installing a solar panel system on your property or by participating in a community solar project.
HOME INSTALLATION
Rooftop solar offers you a way to harness the power of the sun through panels installed on the roof of your home, garage, or other buildings on your property. As an added benefit, they protect your roof. This is the most common option for residential solar. You can also install ground mounted solar panels. Learn more about solar options for your home.
COMMUNITY SOLAR
Community solar allows New Yorkers to save money every month on their electric bills. Unlike traditional solar, where an array is installed on your roof or property, community solar is installed at an offsite location. Learn more about community solar.
Solarize Albany
Through Solarize Albany, subscribers will pay for their electricity through consolidated billing (which includes utility and community solar charges in one) rather than two separate bills (utility and solar). Individuals with National Grid or Central Hudson (predominantly NG) can currently subscribe to a NelNet or PowerMarket Community Solar Farm. Very limited availability exists for NYSEG customers through Solarize Albany.
Solarize Albany is not limited to Albany County. All eight counties in our region are eligible. Your utility company, not your location, is the deciding factor.
Subscription through Solarize affiliated farms results in an estimated 10% savings on the electricity portion of the bill (does not reduce gas costs or meter fee).
Solar for All
Solar For All is an income-based program available to recipients of HEAP, SNAP, TANF, “or other electric bill assistance programs” according to NYSERDA website. In addition to the aforementioned qualifiers, an individual may qualify if they are a veteran receiving disability benefits, are on a fixed income or earn a minimum wage. Renters and homeowners can qualify. Watch how it works.
Solar for All offers access to a community solar farm and provides a discount off an electric bill. Monthly discount ranges vary and can save a consumer between $120- $180 annually.
Solar for All is not currently available for NYSEG customers in our region. Availability for National Grid and Central Hudson customers may vary based on solar farm capacity. Here’s more information about program eligibility and availability.
